Always thought that countermarche looms were too large and complicated? Look again. Introducing “LILLA” a compact countermarche loom with folding back beam. Manufactured by Öxabäck, one of Sweden ’s premier loom makers – all the quality of the larger Ulla Cyrus looms now available for smaller studios and homes. Enjoy the traditional advantages of a “professional” loom.

Why a countermarche loom? They are the top of the line for weavers in many parts of the world. Until Texsolv button cord made the tieup easier than making slip knots between the lam and treadle for a large number of ties, weavers working alone out of the home were usually using counterbalance looms because it is much easier to connect treadles and shafts. Countermarche looms were for weavers in “professional” surroundings – large ateliers with apprentices to crawl under the loom to change the ties. Now, with the help of buttonhole cord and plastic pegs, they are easy to use for any weaver.

Making a shed by moving threads both UP and DOWN is a real advantage. It eliminates the need for a shuttle race because the lower shed is always firm. It taxes each thread the same amount while exposed – meaning even wear and tear on all warp threads. The ability to use high tension on a warp gives the ability to make denser fabric (lightweight fabrics fare very well on this loom, too).

Countermarche looms are very light to treadle since the shafts are being “tipped” in and out of balance and not “lifted”. Overhead beater allows whisper light beating for gauzy fabrics, yet heavy enough for area rugs. The small format of this loom makes tieups quite convenient, especially when pegging is done at the lams reaching over the breast beam.

These photos show my personal 100cm Lilla before I converted her into a drawloom.

Note the large shed.

Breast and knee beams lift out for warping and sleying the loom.

Vertical countermarch means no center cords. No interference with fine threads. Sturdy, compact, well balanced.

Uses TEXSOLV heddles (size 280/12) – works well with ANY warp material.

Designed for the discriminating weaver working in smaller spaces. Later conversion to drawloom possible (100cm Model ONLY). Myrrehed draw attachment will fit with minor modifications to the extension. (Up to 50 pattern shafts).

To facilitate setup and operation of the Lilla loom, we include an English translation of the factory assembly instructions, as well as a picture CD of the assembly and warping process, including the tieup.

We offer technical support for the looms we sell. Extensive weaving experience backs our expertise.

Instruction in warping and weaving on countermarche looms is available – see our web site for details.
