MANGEL BOARD The photos below show the mangel board in use, pressing a towel woven of half linen (cotton warp, linen weft) in a patterned barleycorn weave decorated with soumak laid into the towel following a traditional Danish cross stitch pattern.
(The BACKGROUND is one of two tablecloths woven 60" wide on a 2-ply linen warp with a linen single, handspun and half bleached as weft.)
Cold mangling presses the linens in a way that enhances the natural sheen and imparts a look of luxury to the finished piece.
STORAGE
The Linen Closet or "Leinschrank" - the pride of every woman. Here is where the dowry was kept, along with mother and grandmother's finest linens.
This is an antique Danish pine armoire purchased from a Scandinavian furniture store in Madison, WI - reminiscent of the cupboards in use in the area of Northern Germany where we used to live and where I learned to appreciate these old farmhouse linens.
